(From Our Resident Ileoorter). Saturday. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.™ A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held last night in Mr Tosswill's office, the President (Mr Tosswill)" presiding. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £l2 Is 2d; liabilities amounted to 28s. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —President, Mr W. Tosswill; Vice-Presidents, Mr V. P-osser; Council, Messrs A. S. .Evans, J. W. Sturton, Geo. Oxley, Gl Burgess, W. Norrell, L. T. Herbert, D. Crewe, S. Girdwocd and J. Carpenter; Auditor, Mr G. C. Miller; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr A. Weston. It was decided that the subscription be 5s per member, and where a firm comprises two or more members the charge be 2s (5d for the second and each succeeding member, Messrs L. Feist, J. Richardson, P. Debreceny, H. A. Thomson, J, D. C. Crewe, E. Baucke, C. E. Clifton, W. W. McCardle and W. Owen, were elected members. The completion Marcbant xoad was fully discussed, 'and progress in connection with the work was reported. When completed this xoad will bring Rakanui within 21 miles of Pahiatua. Votes of thanks were passed to the President, the retiring Vice-Pre-gident and the Secretary for their valuable services during the past .year. NEW ZEALAND FARMERS' UNION. PAHIATUA BRANCH A meeting of ths Pahiatua Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union

was held in the Commercial Hotel this afternoon. Mr T. Q.:irk (President) occupied the chair, and a large number of members were present, Betora the business of the meeting commenced, the Chairman, in a neat speech, wished all the members a successful season, and hoped they would all work in harmony for the benefit of the Union during the present year. He desired to se? a still larger number "f members enrolled. It was to be hoped that all members who had not already paid their subsrciptions would pay them before the end of the year (March 31st). At present the Branch had a credit balance in the bank of £l6 16s. A circular was read from Mr Wilson (the Colonial President of the New Zealand Farmers' Union) on past work of the Union, and urging the various branches to work together. On" the motion of Mr Quirke. seconded by Mr McFarlane, a hearty voie of thanks was passed to Mr Wilson fcr his instructive circular. The question of forming an agricultural and pastoral association in Pahiatua caused considerable discussion, as also did the matter of starting a co-operative freezing works. It was decided that the members of the executive form a committee with power to add to their number, and call a special meeting to consider the question of holding a show in Pahiatua. It was resolved to ask Mr Kirk, the Government Biologist, to give a | lecture at an early date on grasses, weeds, etc. Mr Wagstaff brought up the question of the solids required by the Health Department in milk supplied to the borough. He had sold his milk round as l|d worth of milk had cost him £5 17s 6d, and he had bought the milk from a private person ir, August when the milk test was always low. He had sold out rather

than risk being fined £5;). Several other ineaibers spoke on this question, and it was finally decided that Messrs A. McFarlane, Croad, Berchin, Manson, Matthews and Wagstaff, be appointed a committee to collsct all information regarding the standard of nutter-fat and solids in milk as required by the Health Department. The Chairman pointed out that no blame was attached to the health officer (Mr Hicks) in connection with the recent prosecutions, as he had only done his duty. A resolution regretting the departure of Mr Gilruth from New Zealand was passed, and this resolution is to be forwarded to Mr Gilruth. GENER AL. A meeting of the committee of the Bush Districts Show will be held at Woodville on Monday night. A Dannevirke contractor waa the successful tenderer for the four bridges for the Pahiatua County Council. Messrs Mitchell, Griffiths and Co. report on their sale to-day as follow: --Pigs, slips, 12s to 14s 6d; stores, 26s to 28s 6d ; ducks, Is 6d; plums, 3s 6d to 5s per case; peaches, 4s 6d to (is 6d; apples, 3s to 4s (id; potatoes, 7s to 9s per cwt; peas, Gd per peck ; cabbages, Is and 2s per dozen. An aged man, named Moore, was knocked down by a vehicle at the corner of the Club Hotel to day. He was badly shaken, but not seriously injured. The finals in the Doubles of the Pahiatua Tennis Club's Tournament, to have been played in Masterton on Saturday, did not eventuate on account of the weather. Miss Hughes and Mr J. Swainson were to have met Mr Jackson and Mr Wags, of Hutt.
