AN UNDERPAID LABOUR OFFICIAL.

After listening to a suul-stirring account by a lady as to sweating among Sydney workers, the Sydney Labour Council lr.st week proceeded to discuss the question of th,e salary to be paid to their own secretary for the ensuing year. Now, the Sydney Labour Council boasts that it is a large and influential body, and represents the consolidated labour forces in the whole of New South Wales, and, more particularly, 70,000 members of trades organisations. It will thus be realised that the secretary fills a highly responsible and onerous position. It was mentioned that he was obliged to be in the office not merely all day but every night. And what is the magnificent salary this important labour official receives! Exactly £3 10s per week. No payment for overtime—of which there is a great deal. A delegate pointed out that a man of Mr J. P. Cochran's attainments would receive considerably more than £5 a week in a mercantile office, and a resolution was submitted that his salary be increased to £f> per week. But that motion was defeated; likewise one that it should be fixed at £4 10s a week, the council grudgingly agreeing to give their highest-salaried officer an increase of 10s, bringing his salary uo to £4 a week.
