SEASIDE RESORTS FOR MASTERTON.
THE SUITABILITY OF PALLISER BAY. .A CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SUGGESTION. At the meeting of tha Council of ths Masterton Chamber of Commerce yesterday,Mr Donald Donald said he had a matter to bring up which he 1 thought would interest the Chamber, and residents of Masterton generally. For some time past, said the speaker, ihe question of obtaining a health resort conveniently situated to this district had been a subject of cun--1 tinuous but, so'far, futile agitation. B Efforts had been made to open up the » 'Whareama, but so far no tangible result had accrued. There was, how•ever, another direction in which the people of the district could turn if i they dasirad to visit a seaside resort, and one which in some respects at least hnd advantages over the ' Coast resort?. The speaker said ha referred to Palliser Bay. Mr Dml I stated that, in conversation wit;i Mr W. Barton, of that gentleman had expressed very decided convictions in favour of Palliser Bay as a watpHncr place, and a resort which could be made do accessible to Masterton that it -would be even a "very plea : ant one day's outing. This ■couid be brought about by m' ins of a motor launch service f*nn Pigeon Bush down the Waira .pi Lake, through the outlet 01 <.cie % Lake into Palliser Bay. Here there " was a fine stretch of beach, and it was generally a place where a very pleasant arid profitable holiday could be spent. By leaving by tha early morning train to Pigeon Bush, the run from Masterton to the Bay would occupy only from three to four hours, according to the spaed of the motor launches. Mr Donald said that it would bo necessary, if a motor launch service were established, for boati ie accommodat ion to be provided, and the course on the Lake to be properly chartered on account of shallows and mud banks at the outlet. Mr Barton had expressed his willingness to take any member of the Chamber down the L'lke to the Bay in his motor launch, and this would, give them some idea of the merits of the trip and locality as a holiday attraction. Mr C. E. Daniell said the difficulty in regard to travelling on the Lake in the past had been the danger of squalls, but this would not be the case with motor launches, and the difficulty would thus be got over. Mr W. B. Chennells said he had heard that as many as forty people were disporting themselves at Falliser - Bay at one time. Thero was a --terofciful bsach there, and a comfortable hostelry. Mr T. Wagg said that around "Whaiganona tha locality was very attractive. Mr E. H. Waddinn;lon remarked that the route outlined was apparently a more comfortable and safer one than the route to the East Coast resorts. The general opinion of members was that Mr Barton's kind offer should be accapted, and it' was agreed that the Chairman (Mr G. C. Summerell) and Mr Donald be deputed to arrange a day on which a visit could be paid by members of the Chamber to the Bay, in accordance with Mr Barton's offer.
