VIOLENT ERUPTION
EARTHQUAKES AT SAMOA. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 14. In view of th? disastrous earthquakes in Italy, more than ordinary interest attaches to a report brought by the steamer Lord Setton, which arrived from San Francisco last night, that the volcano on Savaii island, Samoa, was observed in violent eruption on January 3rd. It was emitting flame and steam about a thousand feet. The sky for miles around was a canupy of fire. On the steamer arriving at Apia the following day it was reported that several sharp earthquakes had been experienced a few days previously, but no damage was sustained.
