THE BOOT TRADE.

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 13. - At a meeting of the executive of the New-Zealand Federated Boot Trade Union, held to-night, the following motion was agreed to: j <.JhaL owi-ig to the refusal of the J jj eu , Zealand Boot Manufacturers Federav 1 ' 011 to concede a fair rate of wages nnu conditions of employment j to the workers at the conference to-day the lvxecutitt; take the necessary steps to secure the abolition of the duty cut imported hoots and shoes, as it considers the workers of the Dominion should' not , be taxed to support an industry ' which cannot provide decent conditions of employment for the workers connected therewith; that the various Trades Councils, Unions of workers, and members of Parliament be approached in reference to the matter, and a strong committee be appointedjto maket the necessary arrangements for an active canvas in the interests of the movement; and further, we are of opinion that the only solution of Khe boot and shoe trade difficulties is for the Government to start State boot factories throughout the Dominion, and the Federation again offers to loan the Government £2,000 for the purpose." £
