TENNIS.
It is understood that thfi finals in connection with the recent tennis tournament will take place at the Masterton .Courts on Saturday next, January 16th, with the exception of the Men's Championship Singles between Mr W. H. Swainson and Mr C. F. Adams, which in all probability will eventuate at the Dannevirke Courts.
The finals to be played at Masterton are the Combined Championship Doubles and Handicap Combined Doubles between Miss R. Hughes and Mr J. Swainson of this town, and ; Mrs Wagg and Mr Jackson of the Hutt, respectively.
The Chairman fMr Morrell) and members of the High School Committee, together with Dc Frengley (of the Health Department, Wellington) and Health Inspector Hicks, visited the new school buildings this morning, in regard to matters connected withwater and drainagt at the school. Dr Frengley considered that connecting with the drainage system was infinitely preferable to the sceptic tank system, and stated he would make recommendations to the Education Department in that direction. He considered the present lavatories, which are the ones formerly used at the old school site, and recently removed to the new school site, to be most unsuitable, being altogether too low and not up to the requirements of an up-to-date school. The Chairman of the Committee informed me that the Borough Council may, at any time, call upon the Education Board to connect with the water and drainage system, and money spent on a sceptic tank at the present time would be simply thrown away.
A telegram received in Pahiatua, from Napier, states that glorious weather prevails in that town, and the bowling greens for the forthcoming tournament were never seen to a better advantage. The Pahiatua team of bowlers are an exceptionally strong one, and their prospects of winning are decidedly rosy. Two of the team, Messrs W. H. Hawkins and J. A. Walsh, left for Napier by to-day's express. Mr J. D. C. Crewe reports the sale of a 200-acre freehold farm in the Pahiatua district, to Mr Geo. Russell. Mr J. F. Williams, of the local branch of the W.F.C.A., is being transferred to Masterton, and will be succeeded here by Mr Hart. Considerable interest is being taken locally in the Masterton Licensing petition, which is to be heard shortly. Mr J. K. Carpenter, in a replace advertisement, announces that he is making one special price for men's boots. On enquiry, I learn that Mrs C. Stokes is improving from the injuries received by her in the recent accident.
I understand that the Pahiatua Licensed Victuallers are about to form an association.
Quite a pleasant change has been experienced to-day in that not a drop j of rain has fallen. ]
Messrs F. Bentley and Co. announce that they are making still further reductions in the prices of boots and shoes.
Eight crates of cheese from the Tararua Cheese Factory (Ballance) were sent away from the Pahiatua Railway Station to-day.
