FURTHER SHOCKS. AN UNINHABITALBE CHARNEL HOUSE. .Received January 8, 8.20 a.m. ROME, January 7. The Italian Chamber of Deputies imet amid the ruins of Messina, and unanimously resolved upon the resurrection of the city. Further earthquake shocks destroyed the beautiful cemetery of Messina, with its famous orange : groves. Journalists dsscribe the city as an • uninhabitable charnel-house. They .gdd that it is impossible to buy a piece of bread without military sanction. " -S -*~~ SUPPLIES OBTAINED BY FRAUD. FIFTY CRIMINALS SHOT. Received Jr-nuary 8, 8 a.m. LONDON, January 7. The Messina correspondent of "The Times" states that many villagers . from a distance obtained supplies by - falsely pretending that they were refugees. Such offenders have now been weeded out and punished. It is regrettable to state that fifty criminals were shot.

GALLANT SAILORS. MAGNIFICENT WORK OF BRITISH AND RUS3IAN SEAMEN. Received January 8, 8 a.m. ROME, January 7. British and Russian warships, being near to th 3 s:ene of the calamity, were the first to provide food for the survivors, and first to extricate the wounded. The Italian authorities gladly recognise that many more would otherwise have perished. The British sailors were a week without a mouthful of hot food, everything warm being given to the wounded. They worked at rescues till late at night, at their own request. Tue Russians als? worked magnificently. K PRACTICAL AID. A S"IIrLOAD OF STORES. Received January 8, 8 a.m. ROME, January 7. The American Committee at Rome lias chartered the North German Lloyd steamer Bayern, which starts from Civita Vecchia for Reggio today. The vessel carries, besides stores, £40,000, three doctors, and 20 nurdes, with the American naval -attache, and a committee for distribution of the stores. * Mr L C. Received January 8, 8.20 a.m, ROME, January 7. The Camorra practised a heartless -hoax on the inhabitants of the suburbs of Naples early this morning. Alarmists rushad through the streets shouting, "The earthquake!" , others clanged the church bells. \ The residents, in a state of panic, rushed half naked into the streets, seeking the open, while criminal ■ gangs looted the deserted shops and dwellings.

The Admiral, before his departure, received a frantic ovation, the population crediting the British sailors with having rescued all from the ruins. There were cries of "Long Live England!" "Long Live our Saviours!"
