HINDUS AND MOHAMMEDANS IN CONFLICT.
MILITARY FIRE ON COMBATANTS. SEVERAL PERSONS KILLED. Received January 4, 12.15 a.m. CALCUTTA, January 4. The police in a Caclutta suburb were mobbed because, in deference to Hindu feeling, they prohibited the sacrifice of cows at a Mohammedan festival. There wa* considerable feeling over the matter, and Mohammedans and Hindus came into conflict, and a fierce fight resulted. Sixty of the combatants were wounded. The military were summoned and were compelled to fire on the combatants, killing several.
