ATTEMPT TO DYNAMITE TRAMWAY LINE.

POLICE AND MOB IN CONFLICT. EXCITING SCENES. POLICE STONED AND BEATEN BACK. Received January 4, 11.55 p.m. SYDNEY, January 4. Sensational developments are reported in connection with the Broken Hill trouble. An attempt was made to dynamite the Silvertown branch line of tramways leading to the mines, but not much damage was done. Seven officials, who had been given a safe-conduct pass through the pickets, were assaulted by the crowd and much knocked about.

; A contingent of thirty police ar- ' rived on the scene. The crowd stoned them. Exciting scenes followed, and the police threatened to draw their revolvers.

Dr Harris tried to drive through the crowd under police escort, but the crowd prevented him. Mr Tom Mann jumped into the buggy and drove it away.

The crowd beat ths police back. The latter have now retired on the mines.

The Broken Hill Proprietary Company—the biggest mining concern of Broken Hill—recently announced that it would revert to the old rate of wages as from January Ist. At a meeting of the combined Unions of Broken Hill on December 30th, it was decided that the existence of a lock-out in the Proprietary Mine should be recognised as from January Ist. The decision also applies to all other companies attempting to reduce the rate of wages.
