HURT IN A STAMPEDE,

Queen Helena is working devotedly in the Messina Hospital, while there was a panic yesterday, in consequence of a slight earthquake shock. The Queen was slightly hurt in trying to prevent a stampede. GRATEFUL ROMAN CITIZENS. MEDALS FOR FOREIGN OFFICERS AND CREWS. Received January 4, 8.38 a.m. . ROMS, January 3. The citizens of Rome have decided to present the officers and men of the foreign warships with medals commemorative of the heroism displayed by them in connection with the earthquake disaster. NOBLE BENEFACTIONS OF THE POPE. Received January 4, 8.20 a.m. PARIS, January 3. The Paris journal "Le Temps" ?'As% that the Pope has opened a credit of a million lire (about £40,000) for the sufferers, in addition to his other gift, and is also establishing a hospital of five hundred beds at San Marco, in Calabria. CONGRESS TO MEET TO-DAY. Received January 4, 8.3S a.m. NEW YORK, January 3. The United States Congress will meet on Monday to pass President Roosevelt's suggested appropriation of 500,000 dollars (£100,000) for the earthquake relief fund.
KING AND QUEEN RECEIVE AN OVATION. FURTHER TO RELIEF FUND. Recehed January 5, 12.38 a.m. ROME, January 4. King Emmanuel and Queen Elena have returned home. They receiv3d an ovation. LONDON, January 4. The Mansion House Fund now amounts to £30,000. The Duke of Connought has donated 100 guineas. , j The Earl of Minto is organising a j fund. The Italian Parliament will meet on January Slh and vote thirty million lire for immediate succour. ROME, January 4. The Sultan of Turkey has sent £I,OOO and the Russian Red Cress Society £4,000. SIXTEEN LOOTERS SHOT. SIX HUNDRED OTHERS ARRESTED. Received January 5, 12.30 a.m. ROME, January 4. Sixteen looters at Messina have been shot and six hundred arrested. Yesterday some looters attacked a number of refugees and others, and killed an Indian sailor and wounded a Carabineer. The Customs official state that the sea is casting ashore hundreds of corpses in a terribly mutilated condition. The corpses among the ruins are so numerous that it is impossible to bury them on land. Therefore they were covered v»ich lime and buried at sea.
