January 1. i:?« Rongokokako Cheese Company "/ have 72 crates of cheese in the PapaI rca, reported to be on fire at St. - Vincent. J understand that it is in--1 sured for 6d,. which would be about £2 per ton under market rates. The .Nireaha Cheese Company also shipped |k 148 casts by the same steamer. * The metalling ot the "short cut" to Mangatarnoka Valley at Nireaha has been completed in a vary satisfactory manner by Mr J. C. Scott. This piece of road has been very bad 'for years past, and settlers have had to come to Eketahuna via Nireaha :ifor quite six months each year. The short cut is a saving of over - three miles in the distance to town. Mr John Thomasan, who has been for a holiday trip to England, Germany, and Denmark, has returned to Eketahuna, very much pleased with his experiences in the Old fCoun tries.
Jhe town is practically deserted toi day (New Ytar's Day). The bulk of the residents beinjr away holiday making. The Mas'certon Sports and race meetings have taken their shares of the tripper*. Messrs Abraham and Williams have tucked 2,250 fat lambs and wethers from Eketahuna this week to Wellington. The auctioneering firms doing business in Eketahuna have decided to hold weekly sales for the next four months. Tue vital statistics for Eketahuna for December were: —Births, 6; 1 deaths, nil; marriages, 1.
