There were 20 births, 12 marriages and 12 deaths registerei in Masterton last month.

At a special meeting of the Masterton' County Council on January 121 h the Council will fix the day on which the statutory half-holiday will be observed.

An enjoyable picnic was held by the Methodist Sunday School at Mr J. Macara's property at Uoper Opaki yesterday. There was a big attendance, and the outing was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Mr George Watson, jnr., met With a rather painfui accident last evening, having the misfortune to cut an artery on his forehead just above one of his eyes. The injury necessitated medical assistance.

The gross takinga at the Wairarapa Caledonian Sports yesterday "were £l6B 4s Gd for the gates and grandstand. This is about £4O less than at last year's sports. At the concert last night the takings were £6ojjwithout bookings, about the same total as last year's concert. At the Police Court at Masterton on Thursday Fredic. Secombe was charged with assaulting John Savage and Philip Vaughan, and also with resisting Constable Brown in the execution of his duty. Accused admitted all the charges, and was fintd £5 in all with alternatives amounting to a month's imprison-, ment.

Four bankruptcies were registered in Wairarapa last month as against none for December last. year. Fnr the year past 25 bankrupt estates by the D.O.A , as against 11 in 1907. Last year's total is a record in point of number, though for 1896, 1897 and 1898 the figures read 21, 20 and 21 ,* respectively —more than for the whole period between January Ist, 1903, and December 31st, 1907.

During the progress of the fire in Queen street yesterday, Lieut. L. Attwood; of the Masteiton Firs Police received a cut close to the aide of the ankle bone, a sharp piece of window pane glass piercing the boot he was wearing. About six o'clock last evening, as Mr and Mrs J. McHattie and two children, and Mrs Lett, of Lansdowne, were driving towards Lansdowne over the first Waipoua bridge, a motor-car being driven in the opposite direction was obscured from tie view of Mr A. H. Wrightson, who was being driven home in his motor-car behind Mr .< McHattie's vehicle. A new record in wireless telegraphy is claimed from the Pacific Coast by United Wireless, an American concern that is rival to the Marconi system. For three hours recently messages were exchanged with ease between Russian Hill, San Francisco and Kuhuhu station, 011 the Hawaiian inland of Oahu, a distance of about 2,100 miles. Since then messages have been handled daily be r tween these two far-distant points with the greatest of ease.

The Masterton County Council invite tenders to close at noon on January 11th for several contracts of metalling repairs. At the Post Office Auction Mart, at 2 o'clock, to-d-ay, Mr M. 0. Arunsten will offer at auction a consignment of fruit and tomatoes, a quantity of poultry and furniture.
