SHEEP STEALERS AT WORK.

SOME FARMERS' EXPERIENCES.

■ TWO HUNDRED SHEEP LOST IN A NIGHT. • i PROSECUTIONS PROBABLE, i. The police are in possession of information that during recent times a systematic scheme of sheep stealI ing has been carried on in the Masterton district, but are unable at ' this juncture to sufficiently connect I ■■> person, or persons, with the - i in such a way that would theft J " u a prosecution. About a fortnight ago another farmer mustered about forty fat sheep and placed them in one of his small paddocks, with the object of trucking them at the Masterton station nextmorning. A recount, however, proved that ten had mysteriously disappeared during the night. It is beyond doubt that a thorough system of theft and receipt of sheep has been going on here for some time past. Farmers are in possession of facts which place the [truth of this assertion quite beyond doubt, bat they recognise considerable Jifficulty in bringing the offenders to book. The police have made a very close investigation into a number of cases during the past few weeks, and it is probable that more will be heard of the matter. In the meantime farmers are taking every precaution to safeguard, their Hocks against further loss in the direction indicated.

From statements made to a representative .of the Wairarapa Age by well-known farmers in this district, the police, or detective force, should have little difficulty in obtaining sufficient evidence to secure conviction.
