TRAINING OFFICERS.

It is well-known that a shortage of capable officers would be one of the most serious difficulties encountered by New Zealand, either in case of truuble or of any large increase in our defensive forces. The Auckland ''Herald" states that the scheme for sending volunteer officers to England for training, good as it is, only partially covers the ground, seeing that what is as imperatively required is some adequate local system of training officers in sufficient numbers to meet any emergency. In Australia, chairs for the purpose are being established in the. Sydney and Melbourne Universities, a sensible step which will certainly be followed in the other States, and should be carefully considered in New Zealand. The painstaking study of military science is absolutely necessary if our defence forces ate to be properly handled. There should be every opportunity given to New Zealanders to learn as much of this as could well be taught within the Dominion, and every encouragement should be given to induce them to study military science.
