STATE COAL.

The cost of domestic coa! is a very heavy tax upon the householder throughout the Dominion, and "the completion of the Midland Railway should result in a cheapening of this commodity not only in Canterbury, but throughout a large portion of the South Island, states the Christchurch "Star." A country which is admittedly rich in coal deposits should not be dependent for its supplies en outside sources, and while it is, of course, necessary to proceed with every cannon, it is undoubtedly within the legitimate province of the State to assist in the development of those resources. The Government's experience in this direction, in tha face of strong opposition, should encourage it to further practical exploitation.
