INTERESTING FIGURES.

As showing the great growth in the business, of the Postal and Tdegraph Department of recent years, the Post-master-General (Kir Joseph Ward) quoted some interesting figures when opening the new post office at Newmarket((Auckland) last week. When he nrbt took charge of the Department, he said, the revenue was under £200,000 year. Since then the charges had been reduced in all sections of the Department -in some cases to the extent of 300 percent., whilst the reduction had scarcely been less than 100 per cent, in any instance. Altogether the concessions amounted to something like £300,,000 or £400,000 a year. Despite all thi3, it was anticipated that the revenue of the Department for the present financial year would amount to the record total of about £900,00 i), and in regard to the convenience and cheapness of our postal service, Sir Joseph said the New Zealand people were in the proud position of possessing facilities that were not equalled in any other part of the world, surpassing even those afforded in Great Britain, Canada, and the United States.
