A NEW SCHEME.
A-scheme for a complete 'hygienic system in connection with the sale and'distribution of meat in Auckland has been evolved by the 'Public Health Department. Model by-laws, relating to the management of butchers' shops, have been drafted, and these have been referred to the City Council for consideration. The principal aim is to prevent the meat when in the shop, or in the deliverycarts or baskets, from contamination by dust or flies. It is proposed that each shop shall be licensed, and also that the shop fronts shall be protected by glass or gauze. The district hesilth officer (Dr Purdy.) states that, so far as he is able to learn, the butchers would welcome wockahle regulations'Of the kind, .and that the licensing of shops,in particular would meet with their support. A movement has.also been inaugurated byMr Gilruth, chief Government veterinarian, with the view of requiring that pigs -intended far sale shall be slaughtered in puhlic abattoirs, where such exist. It is also suggested that the carcases of pigs should be wrapped in canvas during transit on railways or steamers.
