RACING.
LOWER VALLEY JOCKEY CLUB. SECOND DAY. (By "Zetland"). The Club was again favoured with good weather conditions, but the attendance was not large. The sum of £1,698 was put through the totalisators, against £2,646 last year, and five bookmakers plied their calling. The racing was interesting, and the winners were morei difficult to select as only two favourites scored during the day. The starting was again satisfactory, the events were run off punctually, and there were no protests or inquiries to take up the time of the stewards. The winning riders during the day were R. Hatch and N. Williams two each, F. Langstone, A. Watson, J. Hall and Mr J. Tilyard one each. Results: HACK HURDLE HANDICAP, of 55sovs; If mile. B. Keeper's Lerida, 10.10, Linstock— Merveilleux (J. Hall) 1 J. Orr's Straban, 9.0 (Reardon) 2 R. Cooper's Kuranui, 9.0 (Raymond) 3 Lebeccio 9.11 (J. Hercock) also ran. Straban and Kuranui led past the stand, and at the back the latter took up the running. He was deposed at the half-mile post by Lerida, who held her place and won easily by two lengths. Time, 3min 26sec. AORANGI HACK HANDICAP, of 45 sovs; 7 furlongs. J. Cress' Thera, 8.5, Amphion— Inisthora (F. Langstcne) 1 J. Tilyard's Swallow, 7.10 (R. Hatch) 2 B. Ward's Glen, 8.9 (A. Watson) 3 St. Charles 6.10 (P. Smith) also started. Swallow got out quickly and was joined at once by Glen. The pair cut out the running tojthe straight. Opposite the stand Thera put in a run and won by half a length. A neck between Swallow and Glen. Time, lmin 33£ sec.
MARTIN MEMORIAL HANDICAP, of 65 sovs; 6 furlongs. J. Chisholm's Skye, 7.5, Saracen— Warnote (N. Williams) 1 Mrs Kingi's Mataari, 7.10 (McNamara) 2 W. Smart's Tupono, 8.10 (R. Hatch) 3. Narcotic 8.0 (F. Langstone) and Strathcona 7.5 (P. Smith) also ran. Tupono led to the turn for home, where Skye and Mataari went to the front. In a good finish Skye scored by a length. King Post cut out the running to the entrance to the straight, where Mataari joined him with Prism close up. Retinue lei to the far turn, closely attended by Glen, At the corner of the straight Diplomatic moved up,, and while Glen and Warlock were fighting out a finish Diplomat:? slipped through and won by a clear length. Williams) 2 Watson and Kilminster's Lady Shannon (A. Watson) 3 Sweet Shot (T. L. Catt), Waihanga (F. Langstone), Trixie (McNamara), Friday (Reardon), Psyche (Crawford), Retinue (W. Galbraith), also ran. Merrie Christmas followed closely by Lady Shannon and Tainui held the lead until half-way down the straight. The latter then put in a nice finish and won by a length. MANAWATU RACES. By Telegraph—Press Association. PALMERSTON N., December 28. The Manawatu races were concluded to-day in fine weather. The sum of £11,284 was put through the machine, bringing the total up to £37,042 for the meeting. Results:— Whitmore Hurdles, 1J mile—J. R. McDonald's Aotea, 9.12, W. Young, 1; V.
