LONDON MARKETS.

t J HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Industries and 'Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, 19th December, 1908: The mutton market is depressed, and there is a dull sale for all qualities, although stocks of New Zealand mutton on hand are light, and are firmly held in few hands. Current quotations are as follows Canterbury mutton 3fd, North Island River Plate 3Jd per lb. The lamb market is quiet, and there is scarcely any demand. Australian lamb is in large supply, only best quality being saleable. Current quotations are Canterbury lamb 5Jd, other than Canterbury 4gd, Australian, 4£d per lb. The beef market is dull, and supply exceeds demand. Hindquaiters are quoted at 3£d, and forequarters at 3d. Quotations for New Zealand beef are nominal. The butter market is weaker and slightly lower, and buyers are holding back) expecting prices to go lower. The following are ths current •quotations:—Choicest New Zealand 110s, Australian 106s, Danish 114s, -Argentine 105s, Sibexian 103s per •cwt. The cheese market is quiet, owing to a poor demand. New Zealand makes are quuted at 58s per cwt. The hemp market is i lifeless. Current quotations for all positions are as follow Good fair grade £25, fair grade £23, fair current Manila £24 15s. Last week's output from .Manila amountad to 23,U00 bales. The cocksfoot seed market is very dull, quotations being 78s nominal for bright clean 171b seed.

The hop market is steady, with a very good demand —New Zealand long-bf>rried wheat on spot exgranary per qr. of 4961b, 37s 6d; abort-berried do., 35s 6d, nominal; sparrowbill oats (short), ex granary on spot, per qr. of 3841b, 245; New Zealand oats (Danish), ex granary on spot, per qr. of 3201b, 16s 6d. New Zealand beans, f.a.q. (old crop)., per 5041b, 325. The market is firm. New Zealand partridge peas, per 5041b, 34s 6d. The market is firm, and prices are well maintained, i The wool market is quieter. The following are the current quotation for Bradford tops:—36's low breds, 10£ d; 40's low cros3breds, 11 ; 44's medium crossbreds, Is OJd; 50's haif-breds, Is 4£d; 56's quarterbreds, isftfd; 60's merions, Is lid.
