ATHLETICS.
The following concerning an athlete well-known in Masterton is j taken from an English paper:— . "The want of properly-organised J arrangements for representation j at future Olympic games perhaps | needs no emphasising, but how i many at th's part of the world knew that Arthur Halligan (New Zealand) was available, and showing form fit for the highest class of hurdles. Last year he won the Wellington hurdles championship in 17sec, and was third to H. T. Conk and Anderson in the New Zealand championship, won in 16 2 ssec, besides securing successes in handicap hurdles and high jumps. Hp then went to Denny's yards at Dumbarton, for electrical experience, and at the j Scottish championships won his heat of the hurdles, and in the final, after falling at the first hurdle, got up and finished a close second. As a result he was picked for Scotland v. Inland, and won it. Aiiur the' Olympic games he was pi ied for Scotland v. America. C. B. Bacon, the 400 metres Olympic hurdle champion, was the America): representative. Halligan Jed him by about two feet from first hurdle to last, but Bacon threw himself at the tape and made a dead heat of it. Halligan's performance created much f ?rvour, as he was carried off the ground by enthusiasts, and entertained publicly on returning to Dumbarton." Halligan. who is a nephew of Mr J- Halligan, late of the stock office, Masterton, competed at amateur sports at Masterton a few years ago.
