CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce met yesterday, Mr G. C. Summerell, President, in the chair There were also present —Messrs H. C. Robinson, F. W. Carey, D. Donald, E. H. Waddington, J. B. Moodie, J. D. Cruickshank. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £l2 14s 3d.

Mr G. F. Richards, Te Wharau, mail contractor, wrote to ask if the chamber could do anything to help him in regard to the coach service to Te Wharau, the q estion of payment of subsidy towards which certain tradespeople of Masterton were the subject of litigation in the District Court at Masterton a few months ago. Mr Richards stated that he had found his kgai position was such as to make him unable to record the subsidies promised, and the contract was not paying, which meant that unless some assistance could be given by the chamber, which had assisted in the negotiations informally, he and his bondsmen intended to apply to have the contract cancelled. The chairman was favourable to the chamber doing something to assist in the direction asked. Mr Summerell explained the facts regarding the formation of the contract. Mr Robinson also considered some action should be taken by the chamber.

Mr Moodie thought it was hardly a matter for the chamber, but if Mr Richards considered he still had a grievance it should be discussed by the guarantors and Mr Richards.

After some discussion it was resolved to write to Mr Richards informing him that the chamber regretted it was unable to deal with the matter, but that Messrs Summerell, Cruickshank and Moodie' were willing to call the guarantors together to discuss the matter further in the hope of being able to assist him to carry on the contract. The secretary brought up the matter of the dangerous railway crossing and other matters needing remedying at the local railway yards. —lt was decided to allow the matter to remain in abeyance until the new Ministry was appointed. /
