On tittquiry last evening an Age reporter apcertained that Mr C. A, , Pownall's condition had improved. Mrs T. Smith, a very old resident of Kaiwaiwai, is . seriously ill, and but small hopes are held out for her recovery. It is stated that Mr A. F. Wildings the noted tennis player, intends settling down in New Zealand, the land of his birth, as a barrister. Dr Charles Dawson, of Woodville, has been appointed medical officer' afe the Cook Islands, at a salary of £350 a year. He leaves tor his new home next month. Mr and Mrs F. H. Wood, of Tauranga, and erstwhile residents of Masterton, are at present on a visit to Featherston. Mr Wood was in Masterton yesterday. Miss Oonah Fitzgerald, daughter of Mr Gerald Fitzgerald, of Wellington, and grand-daughter of the late James Edward Fitzgerald, New Zealand's first Premier, was married last month in the parish church of Worplesdon, near Guilford, to Mr Albert de Castro Glubb. The death is announced of Mr Closs, for many years headmaster of Alexandra School, who only last week restired from the service owing to ill-health. His son is medical officer to the Auckland Hospital , and his brothers are Dr. Closs, Dunedin, and Rev. Closs, Congregational Church, Christchurch. The death occurred at Palmerston. North on Monday last, after a short illness of Mrs Louisa Belfit, an old resident. She had lived in Palmersten North over 33 years and arrived in New Zealand in the Woodlark in. 1875. She leaves two sons, Messrs Robert and George Belfit,. of Palmerston North, and a daughter, Mrs Whitburn, of Wellington, also three sisters and three brothers to morn their loss. A presentation was made by the office staff of Messrs W. B. Ghennells and Co. to Mr G. V. Darroch, a popular member of the staff, and well-known in local cricketing and athletic circles, who is to be married < shortly. The presentation was a very handsome one, and was made by Mr J. H. Pauling, who expressed the hearty wishes of the staff and firm for the future happiness and prosperity of the recipient and his prospective bride. Mr Darroch returned thanks in a brief but sincere speech. A wedding of considerable interest to Masterton residents took place at the Hutt yesterday, when Mr Archibald Daniel!, second son of Mr G..E. Daniel], of Masterton, was married to Miss Flossie Eddie, daughter of Mrs Broadbent, formerly of Lincoln Road, Masterton. 3Rev % J. N. Buttle, of Masterton, performed the ceremony, which was attended by all the members of the Dridergoom's family, and which was a most felicitous function. Mr A. Dariiell's many Masterton friends wil) extend hearty congratulations and good wishes to him and his nride..

Boilings, who was acting for the respondei.ts, stated, on behalf of the legal profession of Masterton, that they were all deeply sorry that Mr C. A. Povvnall was seriously ill.. He was a popular and respected member of the profession, and it waa particularly unfortunate that he should be taken ill at the present time. Mr Hollines expressed the earnest hope that Mr Povvnall would soon be restored to health again. Mr W. P. James, S.M., indorsed the remarks of Mr Hollings, and said the Bench also trusted to see Mr make a speedy recovery.
