PAHIATUA NEWS.
BAZAAR AT HUKANUI. (From Resident Reporter.) TUESDAY, December 8. Quite a change in the weather took place on Monday night, the warm wind from the west turning round to the south, and to-day, occasional cold showers fell. A bazaar is to be held in the Hukanui Hall in aid of the Public Library. During the evening a waltzing competition will be held, which is already evincing great enthusiasm amongst the young folk. One of the drivers of the brakes between Pongaroa and Pahiatua informed me this morning that the road between Makuri and Pongaroa was in splendid condition, and was being taken advantage of several
cyclists. The local livery stable proprietors are running drags to the Woodville race course on Wednesday and Thursday, and the shops close at 12 o'clock instead of 1 p.m.
The Wesleyan Choir, assisted by friends, will journey to Eketahuna, this evening,—Wednesday—to give a reproduction of the cantata "gather, which recently met with general approval in Pahiatua,. S.M. COURT. L. P. Bennett, for whom Mr McSherry appeared, claimed the sum of £1 12s 8d from A. B. Anderson, for whom Mr Ulrick appeared, and a counter claim was put in by defendant for £ll3s being value of one ewe and one lamb alleged to have been killed at Bennett's slaughter-house by Bennett's men. After hearing considerabe evidence on the case, His Worship allowed defendant £1 on the counter claim, and gave judgment for plaintiff for 12s Bd, each party to pay his own costs.
ELECTION PETITION. A COUNTY ELECTION CHALLENGED. OBJECTIONS NOT SUSTAINED. An election petition was heard by Mr Wr P. James, S.M., on Tuesday last. The petition was signed by five residents in the Puketoi Riding, and asked that the election of Mr H. F. Coom, as a member of the Pahiatua County Council, be declared void on the grounds —(1) That Mr Coom's nomination paper vas illegal, and (2) that people voted at the County election on December 11th who were not entitled to vote. Mr OsbourneLilley appeared for the petitioners, and Mr G. H. Smith for the Returning Officer. After considerable argument, His Worship stated that from a common sense point of view he did not think the irregularities complained of were sufficient to upset the poll, and he would not put the County to the expense of another election. The names were not put on *the roll as they should have been by the Returning Officer, but taking everything into consideration the result of the poll would not be affected. The £lO deposit would be returned to the petitioners, and the County Council would have to bear the expenses of the advertising.
CRICKET MATCH.
The Secretary of the local Cricket Club informs me that a two day's match has been arranged between the Kilbirnie Cricket Club and the , Pahiatua Cricket 'Club, to take place on Christmas and Boxing Days. It is to be hoped that our local sports will practise in the meantime, so as to ba able to bring back the laurels from the city team.
ANOTHER ELECTION PETITION
Mr James, S.M., will sit at Pongaroa on Friday next, when a petition will be heard, filed under the "Electors and Polb Act," to void the election of Councillors for the Pongaroa Riding of the Akitio County Council. Mr Ulrich, of this town, will appear for the petitioners.
ENJOYABLE SOCIAL AT SCARBOROUGH.
TO MR E. DOYLE,
An exceedingly pleasant evening was spent in the Scarborough Schoolroom, on Tuesday evening, when the railway staff, carriers and friends met to bid good-bye to Mr E. Doyle, who has received promotion and is being transferred to Dunedin.
Mr T. Short, chairman, in a neat speech stated that Mr Doyle was an old resident of this district', and for the last four years had been a porter at the Pahiatua Railway station. He was well liked by all the railway utaff, and a general favourite amongst the local carriers, and he was proud to think Mr Doyle had received well-earned promotion. He then asked the guest to accept a travelling rug, and a silver mounted cigarette-holder and case, from the railway staff, and the carriers. Messrs C. Bluett. J. McDavit and H. Selby, endorsed the former speaker's remarks, Mr Selhy's speech being very humorous.
Mr Doyle briefly replied, and said it would be a very difficult thing for him to leave Scarborough where he had resided for so many years, and made many nice friends.
During the evening songs were rendered by Messrs J. Vosper (2), B. Doyle (2), W. Yewen (2), H. Pearcey, H Lawton, and J. Doyle, while comic recitations were rendered by Messrs H. Selby and D. j Wilton. Mr H. Lawton gave a good exhibition of a Lancashire step dance, and Mr C. Bluett played three violin solos. Mr B. Doyle accompanied the singers on the piano. THRIVING DAIR* FACTORIES. A respected dairy-farmer at Ballance informs me that the Tararua Cheese Factory, which was shifted from the Range road to Mr Marriot's place at the beginning of this season, is doing exceedingly wel 1, and about eleven hundred gallons ot milk is delivered to the factory daily. The season's output was sold at a very satisfactory price at the beginning of this season, and he states that this season has been the best so far that has ever been experienced . in Ballance.
The Ballance No. 1 Butter Factory is likewise doing well, the output being about 30 boxes of butter per day. The same gentleman said the Ballance people were given a treat on Thursday last when a biograph entertainment was given in the Public Hall. SMART POSTAL DELIVERY. Mr J. D. Crewe showed me a letter this morning to illustrate the completeness of the Postal system within New Zealand. The abovementioned letter was posted by Mr J. D. C. Crewe in Capetown, South Africa, on November 6th —to satisfy himself with the Postal lsy?tem—and as addressed David Crewe, Esq., Pahiatua; the 'latter gentleman receiving it by this morning's mail.
MEETING OF LICENSING COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the Pahiatua Licensing Committee was held in the Woodville Courthouse, on Wednesday, December 9th. Present—W. P. James, S.M., chairman, David Hughes, S. Bolton and J. Hughes. The only business put before the meeting was the application of several transfers, which were granted.
