COUNTY ELECTION UPSET.
irregularitj.es proved.
By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, December 9.
At Dargaville an electoral petition was heard before Mr Dyer, S.M., against the election of Councillor Field, of Maungaru Riding, Hobson County. The grounds alleged were that the roll was improperly made, and persons were thus disfranchised, that the deputy returning officer left the booth unguarded several times.
Mr R. J. Coates, repesented Edward Harding and nine other petitioners.
Cr E. T. Field opposed personally, Mr Hayes, County Solicitor, watching the proceedings. The evidence of the County Clerk was that he omitted to file the 1907-8 roll, and that he added thirteen names and deleted two from the roll used, which was not passed by the Magistrate. There were seven other witnesses.
The Magistrate upset the election, granting costs to the amount of £l2 14s against Field and the returning officer.
