PAHIATUA NEWS.
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. SEWAGE EXTENSION. The ordinary meeting of the above Council was held in the Chambers on Monday, December 7t*. Present,—His Worship the Mayor (Mr D. Crewe), and Crs J. D. Wilson, E. C. Cox, Bisdee, F. G. Milne, J. Sturton, J. [B. Westlake, and D. P. Davidson.
A report was received from Mr G. Laing-Meason, stating that he had inspected the sswage extension works, and the work has been executed in a very satisfactory manner; aiso that the whole of the works in Pahiatua are in excellent erudition, and considers the system -one of the best in the Dominion. The Sanitary Inspector reported 'three cases of infectious diseases in thejßorougb. The general condition of sanitary works was good.
The report from the Borough Overseer stated that the work of cutting the grass in the squares and tarring the paths had been completed. A deputation of the proprietors of horse vehicles waited on the Council, regarding the position re driving horses through the strt e!sof the Borough. —On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Milne, the following resolution was passed: —That the application of the various horse owners to drive horses to and from their paddocks be granted, on condition that they do not allow them to be driven between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
The application of several residents in Mann Street to have their properties connected with the water and drainage, was referred to the Works Committee .for a report.
The Town Clerk was instructed to forward the thanks of the Council to Messrs Baucke and Co. for donating a garden seat for the town squares.
It was decided to tar and sand •various footpaths im the Borough.
The following acuounts were passed for payment: —General, £.115 12s 4d; Loan account, £9 6s:; Mr Laing-Meason, £6l 13s lid;; Fire Brigade, £29 13s ■6d. CIVIL SITTINGS.

Judgments for the plaintiffs were given in the following civil eases::— E. B. Hare v. G. Armstrong, claim £3, costs 15s; Abraham and Williams, Ltd., v. Donald Fraser, claim £176 10s, court costs £2 19s, solicitor's fees £5 Bs.
Two local milkmen, whose milk fell below the standard test, when a test was made of milk taken by Inspector Hicks on August sth, were each fined 40s and costs. In imposing the penalty, His Worship suggested that in future the Inspector should take a sample of A the milk on a fine day, and not a very wet morning, as was done in the present case.
Charles Larsen, for being on licensed premises after hours, was fined 10s and 7s costs; and lor obtaining liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, Alma Chapman was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon.
An order of 35s per Week was made against James . Robertson to provide for his wife and family.
Messrs Mitchell, Griffith and Co., Ltd., auctioneers and estate agents, of Pahiatua, hold regular weekly sales of furniture, produce, poultry, etc., at the Mart, and invariably get top prices for all that is offered. They receive entries right up to date of sale, and will in future advertise same in the columns of the Wairarapa Age. Farmers throughout • the Forty-mile Bush who have stock j ,for sale are invited to communicate -with the firm. As agents for the jjlalcolm Furnishing Company, Messrs Mitchell, Griffith and Co. are pre;3>ared to sell furniture at lowest current rates.
Since Mr J. K. Carpenter took over ■t&e proprietorship of the oldest established boot and shoe business in Pahifitua, he has materially enlarged and unproved the premises, and today his establishment is one of the brightest' and most up-to-date in pahiatua, with' a stock unexcelled in any inland town in the Dominion. Mr Carpentsr, who is a ke*n and enterprising tradesman, has been associated with the boot and shoe trade all hia life, and has a thorough knowledge of the value of goods. He buys in the best markets, and as he pays spot cash for his wares he secures the big discounts that follow in its wake, and is thus enabled to give Jila customers the benefit of this saving. Mr Carpenter is prepared to make bocts to order, or to effect re- j pairs on short notice and at reason«ible rates. Country orders will receive prompt personal attention.
