PAHIATUA NEWS.

"COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL TO. MR J. C. COOPER. • TENNIS MATCH. SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVER- _..;, sary. (Special Correspondent.) At a meeting held in Mr W. Husband's office on Saturday afternoon, it was decided to tender Mr J. C. Cooper a complimentary social in Pahiatua on December 17th. A strong committee was formed to carry out the arrangements for the function. A team of five ladies and six gentlemen from the Woodville Tennis Club played Pahiatua on the local courts on Saturday. Pahiatua won by 154 to 125. The annua! anniversary social of the Presbyterian Sunday School was held in St. Paul's Church on Friday evening. Every child attending the Sunday School was presented with a prize, and special prizes for girls and boys were won respectively by Miss A.' Godfrey and Master E. Godfrey. These prizes were donated by Mr F. G. Moore, who promised to donate a prize i.ext year to the boy or girl, who could repeat the 119 th psalm. A good programme of singing and recitations was given by the children, who displayed exceptional talent, and quite surprised the audience, especinlly with their recitations, while several items were given by the full choir of children, under the baton of Mr Godfrey. An appreciated item was a splendid accordeon solo by Mr W. Pearcey, who, also, played a violin solo. Several selections were rendered on Mr Moore's graphophoue. At the close of the programme, light refreshments, supplied by the children'd parents, were handed round.

We are experiencing exceptionally good weather just now, and the farmers, v»hoare not shearing, are longing for a good night's rain. Owing to the dry weather the roads are very rough and dusty, and are not at all favourable to the many cyclists in this district. The Borough employers were busily engaged watering the streets on Saturday afternoon by means of hose connected_,with the several fire plugs in the town.

I regret to record the death of Mrs Murphy, one of the oldest settlers of Ballance, who died on Saturday morning. The deceased had been for many years postmistress, and leaves a husband, two daughters (married), and two sons to mourn their loss. Her remains will be interred in Ballance Cemetery on Monday afternoon.
