LORD ROBERTS' WARNING.
A SUGGESTION,
CRUISERS FOR CANADA
OTTAWA, December 4
The "Toronto Mail," discussing Lore! Roberts' recent warning—that the defence of the country necessitates the Government's immediate attention to the provision of an army so strong and efficient that the most formidable foreign nation would hesitate to attempt a landing—urges Canada to reduce expenditure on the militia by a million pounds, and spend the money so saved in the purchase of four cruisers for the Atlantic, thereby affording defence of the coastal river fronts. A STATEMENT CHALLENGED. IS THE ARMY STRONGER THAN IN 1905? LONDON, December 4. In the House of Lords, the Earl of Erroll and Viscount Midleton challenged the statement of Mr Haldane, Secretary of State for War, that the Army is n?w 90,000 men stronger than it was in 1905. Lord Lucas, Under-Secretary for War, justified Mr Haldane's statement.
The Earl of Erroll was, up to colonel commanding the Life Guards. He served in South Africa. Viscount Midleton (better known as Mr W. St. John Brodrick) was Secretary for War from 1900 to 1903.
