ST. PETERSBURG, Dec. 4
From the Caucasus news of an exciting encounter between police and brigands has reached the capital. The brigands kidnapped Herman Neufeld, a wealthy German, and conveyed him to the village of Fetrovsk.
They refused £2,000 ransom, and demanded double that amount.
Mounted police, with a couple of machine guns, bombarded the robbers' retreat, and killed the ringleaders.
Herr Neufeld, throwing himself to the ground, while the firing was going on, escaped uninjured, and was rescued by the police.
