A MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR.
BODIES FOUND IN A SHAFT. MELBOURNE, November 28. The decomposed bodies of a man and a woman were found in the shaft of the Rushworlh mine, which has been closed for four years, The affair is mysterious, as nobody had been reported missing. The shaft is a resort of swagmen. POLICE INVESTIGATING THE MURDERS. APPARENTLY MORE THAN ONE GUILTY. Received November 30, 1.5 a.m. MELBOURNE, November 29. The police are investigating the Rushworth mine mystery, and believe the murdered bodies could not have got where they were found without lifting baling tanks weighing four hundredweight, and it would have taken more than one person to do this. A quantity of iron rails and other heavy debris were also thrown on top of the tank. The male victim was over six feet in height, strongly built. The frontal bone of his skull was complet2ly smashed while the woman's head is missing. The latter fact may, however, be accounted for by natural decomposition. Amongst quantities of clothes found in the shait was a newspapar dated August 29th.
