LAWN TENNIS.

PROGRESS OF THE DAVIS CUP. GREAT CONTEST BETWEEN BROOKES AND ALEXANDER. Received November 27, 11.20 p.m. MELBOURNE, November 27. "The weather was splendid, frying winds having left the courts in good condition, though a trifle slow. A great crowd assembled t<j g|e the opening matches for the Dgavis Cup. Brookes met Alexander. The Victorian soon established a strong lead, taking the first four games of the first set. Alexander tnen warmed to the work, and placed a different complexion on game. By splendid playing, masterly returns, irresistible smashing, he put up seven games, while Brookes secured only one. The second set will be long" remembered, as one of the keenest ever witnessed in Melbourne. The players took game for game till seven all. Brookes then took the next two games and set. In the next set Alcaxnder failed, while Brookes if anything, improved, Aleaxnder placing service after service into the net. In the fourth set Alexander put up another great fight, playing the best game. The fifth and deciding set fell to Brookes. The scores were —5 -7, 9-7, 6-2, 4—6, 6-8. WILDING SUCCUMBS TO WRIGHT. Received November 28, 1.15 a.m. MELBOURNE, November 27. . Wright beat Wilding, 3—6, 7—5, 6—3, 6-1. The New Zealander in the first set scored the first three games, Wright seemed slow getting at the court. After the second set, in which Wilding held his own, the American had the best of the remaining sets, his game getting better as he went on. His lobs troubled Wilding, , while well played shots dropped just over the net, had ! the precison of genius. In the final set Wilding scarcely did himself jus- ' tice, apparently realising that the position was beyond redemption. | The Doubles will be played tot morrow.
