JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP. Field Gun, 8.2 1 CzarKolokol, 8.11 2 Rose Noble, 8.11 3 All started. Won by a head. Sapling Stakes-Caspian 8.12, l, Cymbiform, 8.6, 2; Boutade, 9.5. 3. Aisywasthe only other starter. Won easily. Stewards' Welter HandicapU'ikitere, 8.3, 1; Ardreigb, 9.5, 2; Golden Cairn, 9.3, 3. Outlander was scratched. Won comfortably. Seatown Trot-Merry P«nce, 25sec, 1; Areida, 20sec, 2; Nellie H, 12sec, 3. All started. Hack Handicap-Volodia, 8.12, 1, British Peer, 7.10, 2; Fanny Free, 8 7 3 Love Wisely was scratched. The Carlton and Rivals commenced n Masterton Thursday Cricket Aal socttfon match on the Park Ova , yesterday under auspicious conditions Rivals went to the wickets first, bemg represented by Waters and Lomas. Twenty-four was up betore a separation was brouhgt about The next two wickets cn.y increased the score by one run. Gray and Waters were mainly responsible for the score reaching 43. Waters was bowled with a fine ball by Moss after making 22 by good | Cr ßa e rr'lost.Gray without the scora being altered. Gray played nicely for his 7 runs. . , ~ Thompson and Ban carried the score to 56, when Barr was bowled by Moss. . .. Edwards' appearance at e wickets put a different complexion on the score, as he bit freely. He m ade some very nice strokes and his exhibition was the best of the innings. His partnership with Dwyer put on 29 mm. Edwards made 20 before he was smartly taken by Hoar off Styles. . Dwyer shaped well for his ten runs. Styles bowled him with a good 3 The remaining batsmen did not increase the score very much, the innings closing for 9-2. Styles came out with the best average, viz., 4 for 35. He bowled really well, and got on at times. Moss -.(4 for 39) also bowled welL Hoar got one wicket for 7 The Carlton fielding was not up to the usual standard, and was very loose at times. . Carlton opened their innings wi.h Voyce and P. Welch, lioth batanen started steadily, and it was «£ tiH2O bad been reached that they attempted to hit out and they quickly ran the score up to 51 before Voyce was caught by Waters off Kingdon. Voyce had made 17 by good cricket. L Boyd and F. Welch carried the score to 65, when the former retired with 2 to his credit. The partnership between Hoar and Welch was a very serviceable one, 100 being up before Welch was bowled by Gray. The outgoing latsman had made 51. He certainly played better cricket than he has done for some time. He hit more freely, and some of his strokes were very neat. He gave two dunces, one before he had reached double figures, and the other when he had scored 48. Waters dropped the catch on each occasion. Carley was unfortunately run out at 101, and then Styles became associated with Hoar. Ref»£ d changes of bowling were tried, but 131 was up before Hoar was bowled bv Morris for a well-compiled li>.
