WHAT GERMANY WANTS.
AN AUSTRALIAN VIEW. Received November 26, 1.10 a.m. SYDNEY, November 25. Mr B. R. Wise, who recently returned from England, in the course of an interview, expressed the conviction that Germany needs Australia and that was the secret of that nation's anxiety to increase her navy. He stated that to his mind there was an absolute real necessity for a much more elaborate scheme of defence than any yet put forward in the Commonwealth. Universal military training, though a step in the right direction, did not go far enough. No training was of any use un less they had a very substantial increase in population. Immigration must be the first step in the defence policy of the Commonwealth. When land was available people must be brought 1 here and taught to bear arms.
