DEATH OF A NOTED CHIEF.
A CENTENARIAN. By Telegraph - Press Association. PALMERSTON N., November 19. The death is announced of Kerei te Panau, a notable chief of the Eargitane and Rangitikei tribes, at Awapuni, last right. Kerei, familiarly known as Grey, was supposed to be the oldest native in the Dominion. His great age is not known, but bis references to events past, which he states' he had seen, snowed that he had reached over 120 years. Many years [ago Kerei married Erene te Awe Awe, sister of the chief whose memorial is now a conspicuous object in the Square, and with his wife and Peeti te Awe Awe brought about friendly relations between the natives of Manawatu and the early settlers. Though contrary to the wish of the family, it is expected the natives will hold a large tangi at A#apuni.
