PERSONAL.

Rev. R. Young, Vicar of St. Mark's Church, Carterton, is at present spending a holiday in Auckland. Sir Robert and Lady Stout and their little daughter go to England in the Moldavia. They will leave Wellington about February 26th. After an erjoyabla tour lasting several moutl p so.-tit. in various part 3 nf the Old Countty, Mr and Mrs D. Pickering i<- - turneJ to Masterton yesterday morning. The leader of the Cape Labour party, Mr G. J. Bruce, arrived in Australia a few days ago. Mr Bruce is anxious to promote the federation of the Labour parties of the Empire. Mr Bruce is a native of New Zealand.

The position of Napier manager for the New Zealand insurance Company, rendered vacant by the promotion of Maurice Herrold to represent the company in Buenos Ayres, has been fillod by the appointment of Mr Herbert Marshall, accountant in the Auckland branch. A Press Association telegram from Carterton states that a movement has; been started to present Mr Hornsby with some substantial recognition of his services to the district while a member of the House' of Representatives. The presentation is being made in view of Mr Hornsby's probable departure from the Wairarapa. Mr J. B. Brown, of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been promoted to a position on the Waipawa branch. Mr Brown was an enthusiast in various sport clubs in Masterton, notably tennis, hockey and football, and he has also taken a keen interest in mountaineering in connection with the Tararua ranges. The news of his promotion will be learnt of with pleasure by his many friends.

* The death occurred at Te Horo on Tuesday last of Mrs G. R. Dixon, who is well-known in Masterton, she having a number of relatives here. The deceased, who was 58 years of age, was highly respected and much loved for her many acts of kindness. The late Mrs Dixon was of a bright and cheerful disposition, and her death will be much regretted by a large circle of friends, who will extend to the relatives sympathy in their bereavement. The deceased will be buried in the Sydney Street Cemetery, Wellington, to-day. Mr M. McCarthy, a well-known footballer, of Masterton, died in the Napier hospital on Wednesday last after a short illness. The deceased was a member of the Red Star Club, and was very popular amongst his Club mates. He was a representative player of considerable ability, , and last season represented Wairarapa.He played for the Wairarapa-Bush team against the ; Anglo-Welsh team at Maate'rton, and his last representative match was fo>- Wairarapa against Wellington at Wellington. He alao represented Hawke's Bay for years on the football field, and both in Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay he had no superior ?s a front-ranker. He was employed at Mr J. C. Ewington's as a moulder, and left on a trip to Napier three weeks ago for the benefit of his health. His death will be keenly regretted by footballers all over the Wellington, Hawke's Bay and Taranaki provinces, where he was well-known.
