THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1908. THE OUTLOOK.
The prices realised at the Wellington wool sales on Friday last have been generally discussed in a nopeful vein, but even if the sales referred to are "the shadow of a coming event," in the shape of a substantial rise in the Home wool market, we must not shut our eyes to the fact that the financial outlook is, nevertheless, of a somewhat serious character. We all hop 6 that it will quickly improve, but financial experts tell us that, at any rate, the improvement cannot come about for some time yet. If ever there was a time when economy and progressive administration were needed in the affairs of the country it is now. To'strengthen the financial position of the country we must increase production, and protect and encourage our industries. We can best encourage production by closer settlement, and by building railways, making roads, and erecting bridges. The Public Works policy of the Government is not on the right lines. Works of necessity should be finished before works of ornamentation are commenced. We do not want costly public buildings when millions of acres of land are
lying idle, and millions more are not producing what they could be made to produce. We should expend the money where it will do moat good, and provided the expenditure is reproductive we should not be afraid of borrowing a fairly large sum annually. Progressive administration does not mean waste and extravagance, but it does mean a system of administration that would prove of enormous benefit to the workers throughout the Dominion.
