THE RISE IN WOOL.
To the Editor.
Sir,—The report of the rise in the pries of wool, as evidenced by the Wellington sales on Friday last, is probably the best news read by the public of this district for some time. It goes to prove that the outlook for trade is not so bad as many would endeavour to make us believe. The improvement in prices comes at a most opportune time, and just when certain financial institutions and banks are reported t« be magnanimously offering the most liberal advance of 4Jd per lb for wool that last week realised from 7Jd to 8d in the local market. The increase in prhe will do much towards giving a better tone to matters financial, and should tend to stay the dismal forebodings of a certain class who were leading themselves to believe that the country was going completely to the bad. To those of this pessimistic turn of mind I would respectfully point out t'rat we are experlencipg one of the best seasons on record, crops are looking exceptionally well, prices for stock are improving, rates for the dairy products, butter and cheese, arcs as remunerative as ever, the wool market is on the rise, and taking everything into consideration there is not much to be very doleful about. The tightness of the money market during the past three months would not have been so evident had the banks been in a position to help their customers for a brief period, and now that things are righting themselves it is to be hoped that we will hear less of the cry of depres : sion.—l am f etc,,
