WRECK OF A BARQUE.
Received November 14, 6.45 p.m. MELBOURNE, November 14. A message from Cape Otway states that the four-masted barque Falls of Hallendale, bound from New York to Melbourne, has been wrecked at the mouth of the Curdle River. The vessel struck about 3 o'clock this morning.
Two boats were launched in a heavy sea, and reached land near the Bay of Islands. The crew escaped without savirg anything. There is little probability of saving the cargo, as the vessel may go to pieces, at any moment. The barque was in the breakers before land was sighted, Received November 16, 12.40 a.m. MELBOURNE, November 15.
It was a bright moonlight night when the Falls of Hallendale struck, but a deceptive mist hanging art the horizon leading the cepta'n and officers to believe that they were ten miles off land.
When they really discovered their position they were less . than half a mile from the rocks, and were travelling under full sail. Consequently they had no time to get the anchor out.
An attempt was made to change the course, but there was. not room enough to wear the ship, and she struck amidships and lies hard and fast.
There ia a general cargo aboard for Sydney and Melbourne.
