AN INTERESTING TEST.
At a meeting of the Council ot the Hereford Cattle Breeders' Association, held at Palmerston North, on Thursday afternoon, Mr J. McGregor (Masterton) referred to an effort that had been inade in his district to have a competition iri which the Hereford, Polled Angus and Shorthorns could be tested under similar conditions on three distinctly different pastures. The idea had been for one prominent breeder of each to take charge of one or more of each from the time they were weaned and confine them together, one lot on Mr Stuckey's property, a warm limestone formation, lot two on cold clay scrub land, and lot three on rich flat land. The animals were to be shown at the Masterton Show each year, and a record kept till they were three years old, and then killed, weighed, arid each animal's exact condition recorded so that breeders of the different j types would have substantial proof which was really the best breed to go in for. It had been proposed to give a substanial prize to the owner of the best animals, but one of the contestants backed out, and consequently the contest did not take place. During a discussion that took place in connection with tbe instituting of such a competition, Mr Arbon thought the idea excellent, as also did Messrs Wheeler and Buchanan, and eventually Messrs D. P. Buchanan and F. W. Arbon \yere appointed a sub-committee to formulate a scheme for Shorthorn, Hereford and Polled Angus fat bullocks to meet in competition.
