EDUCATION IN AUSTRALASIA.
In an interesting article on "Education in Australasia," Mr Tate, the Victorian Director of Education, shows that New Zealand's annual expenditure on every department of education is, relative to population, far higher than the corresponding expenditure of Victoria and New South Wales. While New South
Wales, with a population of a million and a half, spent about £984,000 in 1906-7, and Victoria, with a population of a million and a quarter, spent about £715,000 on education purposes, New Zealand, with a population of barely a million, spent over £BBI,OOO. On primary education alone, New Zealand spent last year about £709,000; while New South Wales spent £909,000, and Victoria only £635,000; and, cna population basis, New Zealand therefore stands easily at the head of the list, so far as her outlay on primary education is concerned.
