HIGH COMMISSIONER'S
•REPORT,
The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, October 31st, 1908: • The mutton market is very duil, but New Zealander holders are firm, as stock is moderate. There is no change in prices to report. The lamb market is quiet, with less demand, and no change in prices. The beef market is quiet but firm, hindquarters being quoted to 3;jd and furequarters at 3Jd per lb. The butter market is very firm, ■with an increasing demand for better grades. The following are the current quotations: —New Zealand 126 a, Danish 131s, Russian 113s, Australian 1235, Argentine 1233 per cwt. The cheese market is firm, with more enquiry. Canadian makes are quoted at 61s per cwt. The hemp market continues dull. There is a poor local demand, and no change in prices. Last week's output from Manila amounted to 29,000 bales. The cocksfoot seed market is very dull, and to push sales lower prices would have to be accepted. Bright clean 171b seed is quoted at 83s per cwt., nominal. The kauri gum market is steady, with a moderate demand. Current quotations are as follow: —Ordinary to fair three-quarter scraped, 1655; fair half-scraped, 100s; brown fair half to three-quarter scraped, 87s 6d; brown pickings, common to good, 47s 6d: bush, fair to good pale and amber scraped, 1255. The hop market is quiet, except for finest English, which are getting very scarce and are quoted at 70s per cwt. American hops are quoted at 45s per cwt.
