Our Tinui correspondent writes: — Mr W. Birket, of Tinui, is seriously ill. Mr W. Berryman, of Nelson, has been appointed conductor of the Hastings Town ±sand. The widow of the late Ensign Edward McKenna, Y.C., has been granted by Cabinet a compassionate allowance of £3OO. Ensign McKenna won the Victoria Cross for ' bravery during the Maori war. Mr William Anderson, who was one of the pioneers of Canterbury, died at his residence, Flemington, Ashburton district, on Thursday last, at the age of 74 years. He arrived in New Zealand in 1863. The Government has granted Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice, twelve _ mqnths* leave of absence, as from ' March Ist next. His Honor, who has i not been enjoying the best of health lately, intends visiting the Old Country. Mr J. B. Taylor, of Waverley, was ' last week presented with a solid silver teapot, sugar basin, and cream jug, bearing suitable inscription, in 'recognition of his chairmanship of 'the Waverley Town Board for twenty-six years. It is the intention of Mrs John Tucker to return to Masterton and take up her residence here permanently in the future. At an early date she intends to plant an extensive vinery on her farm at Manaia, the soil of which is particularly suitable to the culture of grapes suited to wine making. Mr Zuppicich, a farmer at .Woodend since 1862, died at Kaiapoi on ' Saturday. He was well known as one of the earliest settlers. He arrived in the ship Sebastopol, the year previous to settling at Woodend, where he married Miss Cleaver, who had arrived in one of the first four ships in 1850, but who has predeceased him.
