SERIOUS CHARGES.

ALLEGED CATTLE STEALING. THREE ACCUSED CONCERNED,

At the Magistrate's Court, at Masterton, yesterday morning, before Messrs E. G. Eton and T. Wagg, J's.P,, a young man named Frank Carr was charged with having received on October 10th, at Ormondville, four working bullocks valued at £2O, the property of one Garrett, ofTaueru; with having received at Ormondville on the same date, four cows valued at £l9, the property of John McCrae; with having received on the 24th October, at Ormondville, twenty bullocks valued at £l4O, from one Gilbert Langdon, the property.of, Ralph Beetham, knowing the said cattle to have been dishonestly obtained. Clifford Jackson, another young man, was charged that he did, on or about October 9th, at Weraiti, abet one Gilbert Langdon to commit theft of four head of cattle, valued at £2O, the property of John Macßae. Mr C. A. Pownall appeared on behalf of both accused.

Sergeant Miller formally applied for a remand until to-day week to allow of Langdon being brought before the Court on a charge of stealing tie cattle. All the arjimals concerned in the charges laid had been either traced or recovered.

Mr Pownall said he did not oppose the remand, but asked that bail be granted, and, as the two accused were both well-knawn locally, the amounts be not made too heavy. He hoped that when the cases came on again the police would be ready to proceed with the charges. The remand was granted, bail being fixed at £l5O for each accused' one surety of £ioo and accused's own recognisances of £SO. The bail was forthcoming, Mrs Carr, step-mother of one of the accused, going surety for buth the young men.
