TEACHERS' SALARIES.
In referring to the question oJ teachers' salaries in his address al Eden Terrace (Auckland), the Hon. Geo. Fowlds said that the first difficulty he had faced was to get his colleagues to agree to a sum of money sufficient for the increase of the teachers salaries, and when that was assured it was necessary to get the best condition possible with that money for the teachers. Then came the question of fixing an automatic increase of £5 per annum for the teachers in the minimum until they reached the maximum of their particular class. Before this Act was brought in schools with an attendance below 15 were not graded schools, but as soon as the Act came into operation schools between nine and fifteen would be graded, and the teachers for the first time would receive a minimum salary of £9O, rising to £l2O. The object of the Bill was not only to provide better salaries for the teachers, but to provide a better system of promotion for them.
