LAWN TENNIS.

OPENING OF THE SEASON AT MASTERTON. The lawn tennis season commenced in Masterton on Saturday afternoon last, when the Masterton Lawn Tennis Club opened their courts for the season's play. A large number of members and their friends were in attendance, but owing to the rain, which began to come down steadily about 3.30 o'clock, very little play was indulged, in. Afternoon tea, however, was freely partaken of, and when the rain slackened off about 4.30 o'clock, some of the 'more enthusiastic members took advantage of the splendid opportunity afforded for giving the grounds a thorough rolling. The courts, though somewhat heavy owing to the recent rains, were in otherwise excellent condition, and were the subject of much favourable comment by many visitors present. They certainly reflect much credit upon the Club's groundsman (Mr Frank Treader), whose care and assiduity have been unremitting. Judging by the interest evinced by members in its operations, the Club should have a very successful season, and as an indication of its popularity it is only necessary to mention the fact that already nearly twenty new members have signified their desire to join the Club. Club tournaments are to be started at once, and entries for events will be invited.
