STEAMER HAWEA ASHORE.

IN A BAD POSITION. By Telegraph—Press Association. GERYMOUTH, October 30. The Hawea left at 1.30 o'clock for Launceston and Adelaide with over 750,000 super feet red and white pine. When on the bar she was struck by a roller, and being unable to regain control drifted on to the north breakwater. Breakers are now going the vessel. The deck timber is afloat in the harbour. The staff have gone over with life-saving gear. There is tremendous excitement in town. Hundreds proceeded to the scene. Lines were got ashore from the Hawea, and the crew were landed safely. The steamer's position is a very bad one.
