THE ELECTIONS.

Mr T Wilford is considered quite , safe at the Hutt as is Mr W. H. Field at'Otaki. Mr W H. P. Barber should have a walk-over for Wellington South, writes a correspondent. His opponents are Messas W- Forbes, a tramways motorman and Oppositionist, R Hogs, Socialist, and C. H. Chapman, Labour nominee. Election matters are becoming -exciting in Wellington, and considerable uitcredt is manifested in the city and suburban elolovates. Viewing the city seats, it is expected that there will bs a s-.rong contest m Wellington Central, between Mr F. M. B. Fisher and the Hon. T. W. Hislop. For the new Wellington Suburbs seat there are six candidates, but Messrs J. P. Luke and J. E. Fitzgerald, both wearing the Government colours, should fight out the finish. The other candidates are Messrs F. T. Moore, Independent, R. B. " Williams, Opposition, T W. Braithwaite, Independent, and W. T. Young, Labour. Speaking in his electorate (Gisborne) on Saturday, the Hon. J. Carroll {Minister for Native Affairs) said he felt that a stage had now been reached when a little legislative rest was desirable. The coming period should be devoted more to the administration of those laws which in response to the wishes of the people, had been passed. In Wellington North three lawyers •are out for honours—Messrs C. H. Izard, sitting member, A. L. Herdman, Opposition, formerly member for Mount Ida, and F. G. Bolton, Government, Mayor of Eastbourne. The latter has been canvassing energetically, but it is believed that Messrs Herdman and Izard will be found to be interested in a second ballot. For Wellington East four candidates would 'like to step into the shoes of Mr J. G. W. Aitken, who is retiring from politics. They are as follows:- Messrs Winder, Government, W. McLaren Government nominee, A. R. Atkinson, Independent Oppositionist and No-License, and D. McLean (Labour). Mr Winder is nopular, but is new to the .game of politics, and his speeches are not without humour. Mr McLean is an old political campaigner. It is thought that the second ballot -will be fought out between Messrs Windepr and Atkinson. The latter is a lawyer.
