HEARST'S CHARGES. SETTING FIRE TO OFFICIAL REPUTATIONS. FRESH BATCH OF LETTERS. Received October 27, 8.15 a.m. NEW YORK, October 26. Mr W. R. Hearst claims that his fresh batch of purchased letters will set fire to more prominent official reputations. The letters, he says, show that Mr John D. Archbold. of the Standard Oil Trust, recommended judicial appointments, which had since been made, and had also sent Mr Elkin, Supreme Court Judge of Pennsylvania, when he was AttorneyGeneral , £3,000, with a view to inducing him to kill a measure then before the State Legislature. Judge Elkin denies that he received money improperly or for influencing any legislation.
