THE TUATARA LIZARD.
"The tuatara lizard," said Mr Sloman at a meeting'of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society on Wednesday last, "is very carefully protected in New Zealand, and it is almost impossible to get one, yet a person could procure as many as he liked, preserved in spirits, for 10s each, in London, and Hamburg." Mr Sloman said he had this on good authority, and he thought the Government should be informed of the matter. Another member, Mr Whitesides, said that he knew a gentleman in New Zealand who at one time had an excellent collection of lizards preserved in spirits, and he wanted to sell them, and sent them to the Old Country. The price offered was so small he did not think it worth while to sell them. He was informed that in London and Hamburg there was any quantity of splendid specimens selling at 10a each. "There is a leakage somewhere," he added. It was resolved to write to the Government on the matter.
