Larsen, who has been man- j ager of the hardware department of f the Eketahuna branch of the W.F.C.A. for some years, has received notice that he is to be transferred to the Martin borough branch, and will leave for that place on Mon- i day next. Mr and Mrs Louis Becke, who have been staying ir. Auckland for eome weeks', will leave by the Manapouri for Suva on October 28th. From Suva, Mr Becke will proceed to the Solomon Islands, to pursue his in • vestigations for the British and German Royal Geographical Societies, while Mrs Becke, with her two daughter?, will go on to Samoa, afterwards returning to Auckland, to await Mr Becke's return. Cabinet has instructed Mr L. F. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries, to go to the Old Country for, the purpose of bringing out 1 ,000,000 Atlantic salmon ova and any English fish, such as herring and haddock, which it may be considered advisable & by Home experts to send to the Dominion. Last year the New Zealand of Atlantic salmon ova from Canada —but it was unable to make arrangements for a reoeat order, hence the necessity of sending Mr Ayson to Great Britain. He will leave for London by the Athenic on November sth. j Another of the old settlers (Mr Colin McLachlan) died at his resiI dence, Rangitumau, on Monday night. The deceased, who was 82 years of asre, was a native of Ir.ve-r----nessshire, Scotland, arrived in the Dominion forty-six years ago from Victoria, where he had previously rex sided for a.couple of years. In Victoria he. was one of a, party who, while proceeding to the goldfields, •was stuck up by the notorious bushranger Morgan. Mr McLachlan took up a farm at Rangitumau thirty years ago, where he resided until the .wt.tr ' *"""time~sf his death. The deceased has numerous relatives residing in the * district. The funeral will take place to-morrow, leaving Rangitumau at noon for the Masterton cemetery.
