A BURNING COAL-MINE.
BT TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION'. DUNEDIN, October 17. j On Thursday morning an ai tempt; •was made to resume operations in the Allandale coalmine, which had recently to be closed down. The management, acting on the advice' of ■the Inspector of Mines (Mr Green), and of Mr Hayes (mining engineer, of Wellington), reversed the ventilating fans, and on Tnursday, after allowing time for the gases to disperse, the manager and three men •entered the mine with hoses to check I the fire. °n the water being ulaced j ■on the burning face, however, the men were driven back by steam ar.d smoke; and it was decided to permanently close the workings. The majority of the men are urder notice -of dismissal, the management only retaining about half a dozen men to work a 7ft seam in another part of the mine remote from the fire.
